How painful is a catheter for a male?

After watching a not so recent episode of house I was wondering. How painful is it for a urinary catheter to be inserted? I know many of you might yell its going up your ******* urethra it hurts like hell but i was hoping for maybe a little more understanding of what the pain is like? and if its a lot of pain why do hospitals do them so regularly?
Answer:
they do have a numbing cream they can use or a shot to make you not feel it, but it does hurt a little, they do them when you have to be put to sleep (surgery) so you do not pee on your self or the table if you watch house you should know on season 2 one guy asked the same thing
Pain? C'mon what do you think? The foley (inserted) cath is used for a variety of reasons to measure output or if renal problems persist (inability to urinate etc.) It's not too common and is only done when necessary. If systems are otherwise normal there is always the option of a condom cath (just like it sounds.) To describe the pain... every nerve ending in your penis and groin area is going to light up like a christmas tree and you will feel it shoot up into the back of your throat (literally.)

  1. Catheters are not the most comfortable but they do incredible work after surgery. I bought my Catheter supplies online.
